The pun, while Kristeva favours the eucharist, as the defining practice of the metaphoric process. This paper examines the theory of the metaphoric process in the semiotic systems of Umberto Eco and Julia Kristeva. ![]() I develop these ideas through a discussion of the central celebratory dinner given by Babette and conclude by considering some of the implications of the story for psychoanalytic practice. Following an outline of Dinesen's story, I draw on work by Freud, Abraham and Torok, and Kristeva to explore differing notions of unconscious identification, incorporation and the metaphorical basis of subjectivity. In this paper, I follow Dinesen's sacramental perspective by offering the Catholic notion of transubstantiation as a model for furthering psychoanalytic theorizing about the presence of the other within. In her deceptively simple tale, Dinesen adopts explicitly Eucharistic language and imagery to convey the connection between eating and faith, exploring via rich use of metaphor the way in which we come to be inhabited and nourished by the other. Isak Dinesen's novella Babette's Feast tells the story of how a small, quarrelsome Lutheran community in Norway comes to be transformed by the arrival of a stranger, the French cook Babette. ![]()

When you’re simply reading about ways to become a more efficient, productive, type-A superhuman, anything seems possible-that is, until you close the book.ĭeveloping a new habit or organizing a large part of your life is far easier said than done, which is why so many people prefer to read about ways they can achieve these goals rather than actually putting in the work necessary to achieve them. When I wrote Kings of the Wyld I wanted it to be different from what I’d been reading for the last decade or so-which is to say books wherein the main characters could and would die at any moment. What difficulties do you face writing the death of a beloved character? Of course, fantasy readers (and agents, and editors) love a good trilogy, so while I devised the plots of books two and three shortly after finishing the first, it was important to me that each book feature a new cast of characters, so as not to devalue the point of the first. I wrote Kings of the Wyld to be a standalone book, since it’s very much a story about a band’s last great adventure. Did you know where the storylines of Bloody Rose and Outlaw Empire were heading when you wrote Kings of the Wyld? ![]() |
